Part of it is paying attention to how I feel about a game–I have a pretty good instinct for it now (especially how critical I am of myself and my creations). But the other part is data: We always ask blind playtesters to rate our games, and when we see almost all 8s, 9s, and 10s, I know the game is getting really close.
