Even though I have strong feelings one way, I’ve had some suggestions to turn my top-down idea into a isometric idea. Here’s a sample tile image in iso, semi-iso (the roadway isn’t iso), and top-down (my preference), as well as how that tile would fit together during gameplay.

With games like Carcassonne having iso artwork I realize maybe my concerns over the awkward angles of the iso layouts is unfounded, but what does everyone else think?

If the tiled iso and semi-iso images will look akin to that during gameplay, then no, don’t do it. An individual iso looks the best imo, but the top-down is fine too. I think they only thing I’d say is the building in top-down need more character. Yes their roofs may look like that in real life, but a top-down roof is not an appealing thing to look at ever

Yeah, that’s my hang up too…top down looks better in assembled gameplay, but the design of overhead buildings is…ugly to say the least.
I grabbed these from a free vector site, my own drawings were more detailed but lacked ‘something’ to really make them pop…maybe I should just revisit my own artwork and figure out what I’m missing to make it viable overhead.
      Thanks for the comment!
